This series of works started in 2007. The first figure was made in clay
in the studio and cast into bronze. The surviving clay
sculpture was repaired and worked on again; he too was cast into bronze
and so on. Effectively the evolution of the figure being cast at
every stage. The intention being that the clay will never be destroyed,
just continually evolved. Eventually a number of these ‘Giants’ will
populate a landscape, each acknowledging the other in their history.
In the meantime it is planned they undertake journeys
in contrasting landscapes. In June they were floated on a large raft,
and taken up the river Alde to Snape Maltings for the Aldeburgh Festival,
where they floated on tidal mudflats in front of the Maltings, rising
and lowering with the tide.
Future journeys are planned for the Thames and the Hudson,
Manhatten Island, New York in 2009/2010.
